Unwanted Marriage- Tribal Wives BBC
I decided to just dive straight into youtube and watch some videos about tribal rituals, traditions, histories etc.- I stumbled across this documentary that was aired on BBC a while back and it has actually shocked me, I always had thought of tribes as being stuck in the past as I knew they didnt have electricity or really connect with the modern world at all but i didn't expect to see a young girl being physically forced into a marriage whilst kicking and screaming. This 4 minute video literally shows immediately how out of touch many tribes are with the world today.
Woman with Lip Plates
This video had me hiding behind my hands, I always knew body modification was a part of tribal traditions but I never knew the extent of it! The woman in this video can hardly take a drink without her lip plates getting in the way, its strange to think that in my eyes this is horrific yet its her culture and it'd be weird if she didn't do it. This video has seriously given me some food for thought though, I want to explore all aspects of body modification and how it has been integrated in to the modern world. I have numerous piercings all over my body and I have never once stopped and thought about why I got them done, why I paid to have holes put in my body? It just came down to fashion and I just thought it was the 'cool', modern thing to do but it all stems back to these ancient tribes and their traditions that we have just taken, adapted and called our own.
Blood initiation
The more videos I watch the more disturbed I feel, The rituals these people put themselves through are horrific, I wont judge as I know its their culture but I still cant help but be shocked watching people make themselves sick and bleed purely for initiations into the tribe/adulthood etc.
